How to Choose Your Grind (and Why It Changes Your Cup)

You picked a great coffee. Then it tastes bitter, or weak, or just a little off. Nine times out of ten, the beans aren’t the problem — the grind is.

Grind size controls how fast water pulls flavor out of the coffee. Too fine for your brewer, and the cup turns harsh and bitter. Too coarse, and it comes out thin and sour. Match the grind to the brewer, and the flavor lands right where the roaster intended.

Not sure? Start here

  • Everyday drip maker on the counter? Choose Standard.
  • Making cold brew like our Clarity Café™ recipes? Choose Coarse.
  • Own a grinder? Choose Whole Bean. Coffee stays fresher in bean form, and grinding just before brewing gives you the most aroma.

Three quick fixes for a better cup

  1. Tastes bitter? Your grind may be too fine for your brewer, or the coffee steeped too long.
  2. Tastes weak or sour? Try a finer grind, or add a little more coffee.
  3. Store it right. Keep coffee in an airtight container away from light, heat, and moisture — the pantry, not the fridge.

The clarity takeaway

Small adjustments make a big difference — in your cup and in your life. You don’t need a new coffee maker to get a better morning. Sometimes you just need the right setting.
